So without further ado, let’s dive in!
Distribution vs Liaising deals
As a small artiste, distribution deals and liaising deals are all about getting your music out there. But they work in different ways, and have varied levels of ownership, control and connection.
DISTIBUTION DEALS:
Distribution deals, just like the name implies, has to deal with distributing one’s music onto multiple platforms; either on streaming platforms or into physical stores. It’s usually done by a distributor or a music label’s in-house distribution team. These people ensure that your song appears on all digital streaming platforms and sometimes they help you get your royalties. But in distribution, creative control and ownership belongs to the artiste, unless they sign a more binding distribution contract.
And as for payments, some distributors accept a flat fee per release, while others take a percentage of the royalties.
LIAISING DEAL:
Liaising deals, generally refers to negotiating, communicating and finalizing contracts and connections, between artists and other parties, like record labels publishers or other business partners. Liaising is more like being a middle man that ensures and promises smooth transactions or collaborations .It is about connecting people with the right people that can help boost their career. It involves networking, marketing and relationship building, and it is usually informal or based on a particular project.
In a liaising deal, they do not own your music; they simply use their connections to open doors for you. They also help negotiate performance gigs, collabs or partnerships. For payment it’s either a percentage commission, like 10/15 % of the deal they help secure or a retainer fee; a monthly payment for their fees. This deal is usually perfect for upcoming artistes who have their music released but need industry connections and some strategic exposure to get them meet their target audience and career mark,
Basically the major differences between a distribution deal and liaising deal is:
1. A distribution deal gets your music streaming platforms and a liaising deal builds connection and opens industry doors
2. Distribution deals also focus on the technical delivery of music (on DSPS) while liaising deals focuses on relationship and opportunity building.
3. 555In terms of ownership, in a distribution deal, you get to keep ownership rights unless more clauses are discussed in the contract and in a liaising deal, there is no ownership of the music at all.
4. For payment, a distribution deal requires a flat fee or a royalty percentage,, and a liaising deal requires commission on deals or monthly payments
5. A distribution deal ensures sure your music is available everywhere and a liaising deal promises PR, networking and negotiations.
So now that you have all the tea, good luck on never getting scammed, either by artiste, lawyer or label. You’re welcomeee and until next time, xoxo!
