Monthly Music Playlists:

Dear August:

In a few hours, August is going to slip in.

Perhaps fresh and distinct… breezing through like the morning sun, rays splash across the face. Perhaps it’ll come in lazy and coy, like the stretch of an arm to the other side of the bed. Subtle and large, like the rising of dough into bread in the oven.

Or maybe it comes in loudly, like the sound of factory engines at work.

Like a train bearing its headlights at you, telling you to get out of the way or make way for its arrival.

Either way August will come and August will be here after all.

Welcome to a new month and a new edition of Monthly music playlists (August edition)

August reminds us of summertime. In Nigeria, it’s hot and chilly weather, like it’s not sure what to decide on.

As kids, summer was a time of happiness and enjoyment. Regular school finally being out of session, going to summer school with your friends, and getting dressed in mufti. That exciting feeling of no uniforms and getting to pick out colorful outfits every day. Making new friends that may not last forever but feel like the best experience ever. For the Nepo babies, it was a time to travel and experience a new country.

It’s nostalgic in the best ways possible.

As adults, August gets to mean many things. A period of enjoyment, breaks, making strong or wrong decisions, and a period of hot summer love.

I must admit my favorite thing about August is the fact that I get to say the famous Taylor swift line “August slipped away into a moment in time,” because it is lovely to watch the sweet moments fade into something memorable; it makes August feel like a placeholder for memories, for a nostalgic time we can appreciate and look fondly upon. A period in our lives where everything changes and changes fast.

In that vein, today’s theme is “Summer songs that capture the nostalgia of August”

So whether you’re missing a loved one or a good time, or just craving that lazy, hazy, summer day, August is here and we have just the right playlist for you!

DAISIES: Justin Bieber

Believe me, there’s something oddly fulfilling about beginning our playlist with this and something even better about beginning your day with ‘DAISIES’. This song feels like rising from a sweet sleep, with the promise of a sweet and lazy day, that morning stretch, and the sides of your pillow feeling like cushion heaven. It’s also quite lovely to know that despite all the drama surrounding his life, Justin Bieber has managed to come out on top, surfacing through the negativity with an album of the summer (SWAG). The song is introduced with an addictive guitar line that keeps the melody in your head. It’s a song about that freeing feeling of love and it feels like summer love, crushing, magical and insistent. It’s counting the days to see them, the ache and happiness never leaving your chest. It’s longing, it’s wanting in the cutest of ways, it’s a summer feeling you never want to forget, as they stay stuck and ‘all in your head’. Like a  haze you never want to leave, we’re counting the days till this song leaves our head, and here’s to hoping that never happens. Cheers to ‘DAISIES’.

Gimme Dat: Ayra Starr (feat. Wizkid)

On another angle of an August to remember, we have this hit Dancehall, Afrobeats track ‘Gimme Dat’ by Ayra starr featuring Wizkid. Over Here we have sexy, sweaty summers, waistbeads, clawclips, and beachy dances. We have turkey on the grill as the heat flows all around us and the romance is thick in the air. Whether you’re at the club, on the beach, or in a car ride, this song commands moves that will have ready to buss down anywhere. Ayra Starr takes the lead, menacing, commanding, showing what it means to be a true hot girl, as she tells her lover to give her ‘dat love’ and sings about those strong feelings that you have turning your freak on on the dance floor, the romance thick in the air. Wizkid is the perfect complement to her hotness, adding his usual flavour to the music. From the rhythm, to its hot lyrics, Gimme Dat, is forever the anthem for your mood.

Like Dat: Darkoo

As soon as Darkoo comes on, you know it’s time to bend your waistline to unseen angles. Another summer bussdown is Darkoo’s ‘Like Dat’. Darkoo is a creative who owns her unique music style and is constantly cementing her place in the music industry as an Afro superstar. .One thing about her is that she’s hacked the formula for putting women in their element. She not only makes songs for the girlies but she makes songs that make them feel like they can step into a hotter version of themselves. Simple yet pleasurable, she takes us back in time to a 90’s clap rhythm, an Afro hip-hop and R&B sensation like no other. It’s the sultry summer jam to get turnt up to, capturing every feeling.

Girlie-pop ! by Amarrae

Dreamy and intergalactic, Amarrae’s ;Girlie-pop’ is a mood for days. From the tastiest and most radical beat you’ve ever heard, merged with the cutest, breathy voice in Afro music industry, Amarrae drops a summer banger with ‘Girlie-pop!’. It’s Alt-pop in motion, a blurring feeling of flirtation, a reminder of hot romance, and a musical taste of pleasure! According to her, her intention behind this track, tipsy in a villa in Brazil, was to make a song that felt like a kiss and if you ask us, the mission is definitely accomplished! Here’s  to ‘Girlie pop’

August: Taylor Swift

We’ve heard songs that feel like lazy love and lazy drawls, we’ve heard the hot and sexy romance and the thick of nostalgic summer love. We have Taylor swift’s August, to crown the day (of course I was going to slip it in). August is a big W for Taylor stans, merely for the significance of what this song embodies and how it feels. It’s , ‘Salt air, and the rust on your door’, It’s a memory of twisting in bedsheets, and it shows a dreamy imagination and a sad reality, missing what once was, knowing it was never yours to hold on to. In a way., August reminds us of changing seasons; the leaves change color, and things, minute or big, never remain the same again. It carries that feeling of being touched forever by a summer love, the memory like an itch in the throat that will never go away. This song is so graphic you can taste, feel, and probably smell every part of the lyrics. Like walking through a house of memories, ‘August’ paints the loveliest picture.

Now as August approaches, let's remember to enjoy the feeling before it slips away into a moment in time, because we can never hold on to seasons for too long.

Until next time, Xoxo
